Past trends are constantly being reinvented and right now a very familiar accessory has been making a comeback: the choker necklace. For us, (tattoo) chokers are the most 90’s thing ever. Yet, they actually date all the way back to the French Revolution! But it wasn’t until the 1800’s, when the Princess of Whales started wearing layers of velvet and pearls tightly around her neck to cover up a scar, that the choker became a true trend. Everyone copied her look and soon various chokers became fashionable. Some had gold or precious stones hanging from them. We love the idea of a grown-up, sophisticated choker and when Lize found these beautiful quartz pendants on Etsy we decided to make them ourselves. It’s very easy and doesn’t take a lot of time at all.
What you’ll need:
- Velvet ribbon
- Ribbon clamps
- Jumps rings
- Piece of chain
- Quartz pendant
- Needle + thread
Step 1: Hold the velvet ribbon around your neck to measure it. Cut it a about 4 cm shorter than your neck requires it to be if it were to go all the way around.
Step 2: Put ribbon clamps on both ends of the velvet, don’t squeeze them too tightly yet.
Step 3: Attach a jump ring with a lobster clasp to one clamp and the piece of chain to the other.
Step 4: Sew the quartz pendant to the middle of the ribbon.
Step 5: Try it on. If it’s too loose, you can cut off some more ribbon. If it fits perfectly, squeeze the clamps tightly so that they won’t come off.
